Who should pay to use our roads?
Michael talks to SMH Journalist Eryk Bagshaw about his article ‘The traffic solution politicians should stop running away from.’
Australia’s roads are, at least in theory, paid for by a fuel tax every time a motorist fills up at a bowser with 40 cents a litre going straight to Canberra.
But cars are becoming more fuel-efficient so using less fuel. Therefore Canberra is collecting less fuel tax… and on top of that electric vehicles are projected to represent around 19%, or one in five of the light vehicle fleet in Australia in the next two decades.
So the question must be address… “Who should pay to use our roads?”
