In a historic first, Malaysian King Sultan Muhammad V has abdicated following reports he married a Russian beauty queen.

Just two years into his five-year term, the King has stepped down from his reign as the country’s 15th king.

While there was no reason given from the National Palace for his resignation, a statement said it would take place immediately.

It comes amid speculation the 49-year-old King married 25-year-old former Miss Moscow Oksana Voevodina.

Covering the story in Malaysia, Shannon Teo says “it’s kept journalists busy”.

He tells Ross Greenwood those in power weren’t too happy with the King.
