EXPLAINED: Hate crime laws

Queensland is making a significant move to criminalise the use of hate symbols, resulting in jail time.

Queensland is set to criminalise the public display, distribution, or publication of hate symbols targeting specific religious, ethnic, gender, or other relevant groups, indicative of extreme prejudice.

If someone feels menaced, harassed or offended by these symbols will face a maximum penalty of six months in jail.

Director of the Democracy and Accountability program at the Australia Institute, Bill Brown joined Peter Gleeson to breakdown the new legislation.
