A student filmmaker from Brisbane is one of 12 Australian hopefuls nominated for an Academy Award this year.

Lachlan Pendragon’s stop-motion film, An Ostrich Told Me the World is Fake and I Think I Believe It, was initially created as part of his PhD studies at Griffith University.

It’s now nominated for an Oscar in the Short Film (Animated) category.

Dr Peter Moyes supervised the project and told Laurel, Gary & Mark while the film may have got an Oscar nod, he’s not guaranteed top marks.

“To be honest, he hasn’t done the full write-up,” he said. “You’ve got a studio aspect, which is the film, and then, you know, you’re writing a reflection on it.

“So I’ve got to drag him back after the high life and essentially get him to put his nose down and finish the paper.

“But, you know, who’s going to knock back an Oscar nominee?”
