Domestic violence victim ‘distressed’ by government’s response

sofie formica

A domestic violence survivor has rejected claims that a senior government Minister was unaware of systemic issues related to how Queensland police responded to domestic violence incidents.

Police Minister Mark Ryan has been reported as saying he was unaware of failures in responses.

But Queensland woman Lou Lander said her case was raised with him, including her allegations that she was treated as a “nuisance” by police.

She said she was granted a 7-year protection order, but she alleges police didn’t believe her and treated her “appallingly”.

She then sought help from her local MP, Jarrod Bleijie.

She said she found the response from the government “distressing” in relation to the police response into domestic violence inquiry.

“It’s so galling to see Mark Ryan and [Premier Annastacia] Palaszczuk and everyone else standing up this week and saying ‘oh yes we will do better’,” she told Sofie Formica.

“But that’s just not good enough, they were well aware of what was happening.

“When I pleaded with them, my family pleaded with them, there is so much correspondence to Minister Ryan and to the Premier.”
