A Gold Coast man has travelled to the fringe of the Ukraine-Russia war on an incredible rescue mission. 

Speaking to Neil Breen from Poland’s capital city, Warsaw, Jason Marrable said he travelled across the globe to help save his sister-in-law.

He said Iryna and her nine-month-old son Maxim were forced to undergo a harrowing journey to escape the war and return to the arms of family.

They had been taking shelter in an underground train station in Kyiv after Russia launched a full-scale invasion on Ukraine.

“It was really a life or death situation for them,” Mr Marrable said. “We needed to get Iryna and Maxim out of Ukraine.”

The family planned that Iryna and Maxim would make the 800-kilometre journey to Warsaw, where she could be reunited with her brother-in-law.

“It was a harrowing trip for those guys, having to sleep in the woods, having to beg for food.”
