Woolworths announces big change to plastic bag policy

4bc breakfast

Plastic shopping bags will be phased out in Woolworths stores across the state in a bid to reduce waste.

The retail giant confirmed the move in a statement yesterday, saying its stock of 15-cent reusable shopping bags will be gradually run down in coming weeks.

Woolworths state general manager for Queensland Danny Baldwin said the decision was influenced by customers, with 80 per cent already bringing reusable bags from home.

The change is expected to remove more than 1600 tonnes of plastic from the system.
