‘Winter’ dose for COVID-19 jab approved by ATAGI

A fourth COVID-19 jab has been approved for older Australians by the nation’s top vaccine advisory group.

The Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) has advised that adults aged 65 and over receive their fourth vaccine four months after their last booster.

The extra booster has also been recommended for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people over the age of 50, nursing home residents and anyone who is severely immunocompromised.

Nine News reporter Chris O’Keefe told Neil Breen the decision was made ahead of an expected winter wave of COVID-19.

“The problem we’ve got is our boosters and our second doses, if people bothered to get around to getting your booster, that immunity is starting to wane.

“This might be the start of the what will be just one dose a year, like we get with the flu.”
