Widow of Iraq veteran opens up about the struggle few speak about

The widow of an Iraq veteran has spoken out about about the trauma of losing her husband, as well as the incredible support she’s received along the way.

Wanda Sprenger joined Mark Levy in-studio to share her own story in honour of Legacy Week, which aims to raise money to provide stability, guidance and assistance to the families of our veterans.

It’s a sad fact that more veterans of modern wars have taken their own lives after returning home than have been killed in battle.

Wanda’s husband Paul served as an engineer in Iraq from 2007 to 2008.

She says although everything seemed fine when he first came home, it wasn’t until five years later that she saw dramatic changes in his behaviour.

“He went from this funny guy who loved going to dress up parties and had a really dry sense of humour and really active and outdoorsy… to this secluded computer gamer guy who didn’t want to catch up with any of his friends.

“It was six weeks of a bit of hell at home and then he started talking about self-harm.”

Wanda gets emotional as she talks about the incredible impact Legacy have had on her life as they continue to support her and her children.
