Why thousands of avocados are rotting away at an Aussie tip

Gary Hardgrave

Rising shipping and labour costs are forcing farmers to dump thousands of avocados.

A resident in far north Queensland found the enormous green pile of avocados left to rot at her local tip.

The major supermarkets are selling single avocados for between $1.60 and $1.80.

Avocados Australia board member Jim Kochi told Neil Breen it would help if Aussies bought more avocados.

“They weren’t worth even enough money to send for processing.

“If the demand is high and the product moves through, … the price can stay up to a reasonable figure.

“If there’s an oversupply because, for whatever reason, demand drops off, … the product has got nowhere to go.”
