Why there’s a push to ban fast food restaurants near Qld schools

There’s a fresh call this morning to ban fast food restaurants from being built within walking distance schools.
A Queensland academic has floated the idea as a way to tackle childhood obesity, with one in four kids in the state now considered overweight or obese.
It’s a similar proposal to one being put forward in Western Australia, which would reduce the operating hours of any unhealthy eateries located near schools.
Today reporter Mia Glover told Laurel, Gary & Mark the change wouldn’t impact restaurants that are already established.
“I think they’re just trying to prevent it in, say, regional areas, where more and more fast food eateries are popping up,” she said.
