Why the police union wants to buy land where officers were murdered
The Queensland Police Union plans to buy the block of land where two officers and a neighbour were murdered in an ambush last week.
The union has requested the state government resume the Wieambilla land in the hopes it could be purchased at market price and used as a retreat for officers.
Union President Ian Leavers told Bill McDonald on 4BC Summer Mornings he wants to transform the land from a place of evil into good.
“I’d like to see it be a fitting tribute to both Matthew and Rachel and it could be used as a retreat for current or former police officers, as well as it could be for training purposes.
“I’ve spoken with the families of Matthew of Rachel and they are certainly in support of this, as are many, many colleagues.
“It is really important, I never want to see this land fall into the hands of any other anti-vaxxer, pro-gun conspiracy theorist who may seek to utilise the reputation of the site to promote their own dangerous and warped views.”
