Why the Lord Mayor wants Brisbanites to dob in their neighbours

Residents will be encouraged to dob in properties they suspect are being used for short-term accommodation as Brisbane City Council cracks down on housing issues. 

The Lord Mayor says the properties should be permanently rented out to ease a massive shortage of homes in the region.

“This is just one of the ways that we’re moving forward,” he told Bill McDonald. “There’s three ways that we’re identifying properties.”

It comes after the new Transitory Accommodation category was created to slug short-term accommodation property owners 50 per cent higher rates.

AirBnB has hit back, saying council has made “incorrect assumptions” on the effect short stays are having on the rental market.
