Why the Fair Work Commission should heed changes to politicians’ pay packets

A modest pay rise for politicians sets a good example for rises across the board in Australia, Neil Breen says.

The Independent Remuneration Tribunal has decided to award federal MPs a 2.75 per cent pay jump from July 1.

“Think of what you want about a pay rise for a politician but I just want to focus on the figure,” Neil said.

“I think for pay rises across the board in Australia, that’s about right.”

More than 2.6 million Australians will learn how much their pay packets will change today when the Fair Work Commission broadcasts the result of its review into the minimum wage.

Labor believes the Commission should lift the minimum wage in line with the current rate of inflation, which sits at 5.1 per cent.

“If we give 5.1 per cent out across the board for the lowest-paid workers in Australia, inflation will rise, which means interest rates will rise,” Neil continued.

“The only way to curb it is to give out modest pay rises and to correct interest rates.”
