Why scientists are suggesting we blast moon dust into space

4bc breakfast

Moon dust could be used to shield Earth from the sun under a  “bizarre” new proposal by a US team of scientists.

The idea would see moon dust shot into space, creating a ring of dust around Earth, to block the sun’s rays before they reach us.

Speaking with Laurel & Mark, astrophysicist Brad Tucker didn’t seem to be a big fan of the idea.

“Even if it could be right, and first of all, it would be hard because you’d have to get the balance right,” he said.

“But then, eventually, it’ll disappear, so you have to keep replenishing it.”

Scientists from the University of Utah have calculated that moon dust in the right place could shade Earth for up to one week.

“Or you could just deal with what really is the problem, and that’s the impact on our atmosphere and changing that,” Dr Tucker continued.
