Why NASA is deliberately crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid

Dean & Sofie

A NASA spacecraft will be deliberately crashed into an asteroid this morning.

It’s part of NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test to see whether deflecting a space rock could one day save Earth from a catastrophic impact.

The impact is scheduled to take place at 9.14am (AEST), with live footage from the spacecraft streaming from 7.30am.

Astrophysicist Brad Tucker told Laurel, Gary & Mark even if the test fails, there’s no risk of the asteroid being flung into Earth.

“There’s a bigger one that it orbits around, that kind of will hold onto it through its gravity, so it will almost act like a moon,” he said.
