Why LNP pollies say the state plans to ‘rig’ elections in Labor’s favour

The Lord Mayor is calling out a state government proposal that he says will ‘rig’ local elections in Labor’s favour.
The plan would see campaign spending caps of $250,000 introduced for mayoral candidates but would allow third parties, including unions, to spend four-times more.

Adrian Schrinner told Sofie Formica while he’s not opposed to spending caps, union allowances would give Labor an unfair advantage.
“What this is is a financial gerrymander,” he said. “This is a document that proposes the rigging of the electoral system.
“[It’s] the most major change we’ve seen to the local government electoral system in decades and it has to be stopped.”
He said the timing of the move is particularly suspicious.
“To launch what is a major electoral reform, like I said, the biggest one in decades, in the middle of a federal election, that’s really curious timing.”
