Why heads of iceberg lettuce are going for $12 and when prices will fall

Shoppers are feeling the pinch in the produce aisle with the price of a staple vegetable quadrupling in some stores.

Heads of iceberg lettuce have been seen priced at $11.99 in Queensland supermarkets, up from a previous average cost of $2.80.

John from Jindalee told Neil Breen the record rainfall seen earlier in the year is to blame for the massive jump in price.

“The Laidley, Gatton area all got wiped out underwater, all the lettuce-growing areas,” he said.

“Now, with the cold weather, they’re struggling to grow any lettuce at all … and because there’s still a bit of wet in the ground, as they grow, the sun hits them and makes them go off anyway.”

He said an increase in the cost to freight boxes from Victoria hasn’t helped, rising from $350 a palette to $600.

“It’s going to have effects for at least the next three months.”
