Why GPs plan to leverage the election for higher Medicare rebates

Frustrated doctors are jumping into the election fray, campaigning for higher Medicare rebates. 

Patients are encouraged to use their votes to demand funding for longer and after hours consultations.

No major party has announced plans to increase Medicare rebates for GP consultations.

AMA Vice President Chris Moy told Spencer Howson standard consultations aren’t fit-for-purpose for many patients.

“Older patients, those with disabilities, those with chronic illness have more trouble coming in,” he said.

“They need a different way of providing care, which is a lot more remote, maybe supported.

“The current rebate just doesn’t support that.”
