Why a decision made last year could come back to haunt Premier’s tradie plan

Gary Hardgrave

A plan by the Premier to fill the state’s skills shortage could be undercut by a decision made last year.

Annastacia Palaszczuk has called for interstate tradies to move to Queensland to help the flood recovery.

But Assistant Minister for Industrial Relations and federal senator Amanda Stoker warns a move to the Sunshine State will be wrapped in plenty of red tape.

“We’ve got to ask an important question here,” she told Neil Breen.

“Why is that when every other state and territory in this country last year committed to mutually recognise the skills of people in lots of different occupations, Queensland … held out?

“If you’ve got a licence already in NSW or Victoria, you’ve got to apply separately, pay another fee, send a whole lot of forms, prop up the careers of another bunch of public servants in order to have the right to practice up here.”
