‘Where’s the Minister?’: Ray Hadley furious over short sentence for paedophile

A man convicted of possessing child exploitation and bestiality material has received an woefully inadequate sentence, Ray Hadley says.
Kelvin Paul Lowe yesterday faced Brisbane District Court, where he pleaded guilty to five counts of bestiality, three counts of possessing child exploitation material, one count of making child exploitation material and one count of indecently treating children under 12 and 16.
He was sentenced to two years and six months imprisonment and will be eligible for parole on May 28, 2023.
“This is where Queensland is back in the 1970s, when it comes to sentencing paedophiles,” Ray said. “He’ll basically serve about 11 months, maybe 12 if we’re lucky.
“How can anyone in a court of law justify, after a guilty plea, giving this bloke, given the gravity of his crimes against children and dogs via bestiality, … sentence of 10 months?
“Where’s the DPP? Where’s the Minister, demanding the matter be reviewed by a High Court?”

Ray noted stronger sentences have been handed down to people guilty of lesser crimes.
A bookkeeper, who stole nearly $2 million from 2010 and 2018 while working for a Brisbane car dealership, was jailed for eight years in May after pleading guilty to one count of fraud.
“So that’s what we do with someone who knocks off $2 million,” Ray said. “What do you do with a bloke having sex with a dog?”

The Attorney-General has sought advice from the Director of Public Prosecutions about an appeal of Lowe’s sentence.
