Where Dr Paul Griffin stands on the mask mandate debate

An infectious diseases expert has revealed where he stands on the possibility of a return of mask mandates in Queensland.
Queensland’s Chief Health Officer John Gerrard, speaking with 4BC Drive on Friday, suggested there is “a school of thought” among some counterparts from other states that mask mandates should return.
It comes amid predictions of an increase in COVID-19 cases set to form a third wave of infections bigger than the second.
Dr Paul Griffin told Spencer Howson, filling in for Neil Breen, while masks should be optional, some people should continue to wear them.
“If you’re someone who’s particularly high-risk, you should wear one whenever you’re particularly out and about or in close proximity to anyone you don’t know.
“And even if you’re not someone who’s high-risk, if you’re going to a high-risk setting, … then I’d encourage everybody to put a mask on.
“I know a lot of people are sick of wearing them but it’s really a low-cost, zero-harm intervention that again, while not perfect, really does help.”
