When you should get your flu jab before the predicted winter peak

4bc drive

With winter on the way, doctors are warning now is the time for Queenslanders to get their flu jab ahead of fears of a surge in cases.

There are forecasts of a bumper flu season after two years of lockdowns.

Chair of the AMA Queensland Council of General Practice, Dr Maria Boulton, said they don’t know how severe the season will be.

“The truth is no one knows what’s going to happen,” she told Bill McDonald, filling in on 4BC Drive.

“But the reason why we have had very few cases over the last 2 years is because of lockdowns, mask wearing hand sanitising all those things.

“And also we weren’t travelling.”

Dr Boulton says there are around 300 flu-related deaths in Queensland each year.

“The medical advice is if you book now you should be protected across winter, for the peak winter season from July to August.”

She says anyone eligible for their next COVID-19 vaccine can have their flu jab at the same time.
