Gun crime and car thefts in south-east Queensland are getting increasingly brazen and send a dangerous message to taunt police, a former police superintendent says.

Early on Monday morning, bullets were fired into the door of the Arundel police beat, while the officer slept inside.

Just days before, a Coolangatta man was grazed by a bullet in a random shooting on Saturday night.

Jim Keogh says shots being fired at a police beat was a way to taunt police.

He says on car thefts, Queensland has become the “car theft capital” of the nation.

4BC Drive host Scott Emerson said he was surprised there was no mention of the Saturday night shooting until later in the week.

“Well that’s astounding, you’ve got an active shooter, who fires a shot into a car in the CBD of Coolangatta, it enters the window …. it occurs on Saturday, we are told about it on Tuesday, in the meantime the active shooter is there in the community,” Mr Keogh said.
