The fallout from last week’s leadership spill is continuing to rattle the Liberal party, with a federal MP announcing her decision to quit politics.

Victorian MP Julia Banks won’t recontest her Victorian seat of Chisolm at the next federal election, citing anger over Malcolm Turnbull’s demise and bullying tactics by some of her colleagues.

The backbencher says last week’s leadership spill was the “final straw”, and she felt compelled to call out the bullying she experienced by some Liberal members.

Former Speaker of the House Bronwyn Bishop tells Ross Greenwood parliament is a “robust place” and she’s experienced bullying behavior in her time.

“If someone is threatening somebody, that’s not acceptable.

“Behaviour that I’ve had come in my own direction has not been acceptable.”

Ms Bishop says politics is a “very adversarial business” and always has been.

“It’s not for any minor reason that the width of the table between the government and the opposition is the width of two sabers… we’ve replaced swords with words.”
