US President Donald Trump has officially recognised Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, sending the Middle East into chaos.

President Trump has given the direction to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, with Palestine saying the decision is a declaration of war.

Chris Smith speaks with Director of the Washington Institute’s Counter-Terrorism Program Dr Matthew Levitt who says the move has been waiting for approval for years.

“Past presidents have always used that waiver to say now is not a great time, this could impede prospects for peace.

“He sees this action not as something that would impeded the peace process, but rather something that could happen because the peace process wasn’t making any movement at all.

“He explicitly said in his statement, the goal is still to achieve a two state solution”
