Ukraine’s heartache: Stories emerge of brave civilians helping others
The world has watched on in horror as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues, and overnight a theatre in the seaside city of Mariupol where hundreds of innocent Ukrainians were sheltering was bombed.
The death toll still remains unknown.
Tatiana Tatarynova, a Ukrainian woman living in Brisbane shared her story about her parents, who are stranded in Bakhmach, a Russian-occupied town two hours north-east of Kyiv.
She told Scott Emerson there’s no electricity, no water and no internet.
“I feel hopeless, because I can’t help my mum, and my dad and other people because I’m in Australia, in a very safe country.”
People are stranded in the city, unable to flee, and there’s no groceries and food is scarce.
Her mother, who is a doctor, is doing what she can to help people in need.
“They start to deliver some food to civilians.”
Her sister and her children have managed to flee to Brisbane, after escaping early in the occupation to Poland.
