Liz Truss has announced her resignation, becoming Britain’s shortest-serving prime minister.

The chaos of her six-week leadership saw the pound sink, mortgage rates jump and yesterday allegations of Tory MPs being bullied to vote for her in the House of Commons.

Speaking on Downing Street, Ms Truss admitted she could not deliver on her election promises.

Robbie Hawkins, a journalist and producer from LBC talk radio in London, described it as “mental”.

“We are now in this barmy situation where there is a realistic possibility that we might have Boris Johnson coming back, and that’s the same Boris Johnson who is still under investigation by the parliamentary authorities over breaking  the rules over party gate,” he told Neil Breen on Brisbane Live.

He said it was possible Mr  Johnson could come back, only to be booted again.

The incredible political instability comes midst a cost-of-living crisis in the UK, where people are choosing between “heating or eating”.

“The problem is that in the 44 days, she took over from a prime minister who’d left a fairly rough state, the way the numbers were going, and she made the numbers worse,” UK correspondent Adam Gilchrist told Laurel, Gary & Mark.

She will stay on until Britain’s third prime minister this year is voted in by Tory MPs and members in the next week.

Former chancellor Rishi Sunak is considered the front runner but Boris Johnson has signalled he’s aiming for a comeback.
