Wage theft has reached a record high in Australia, with new figures revealing two-thirds of workers are not receiving their full pay entitlements.

Research from payroll provider ADP has revealed most workers experience pay issues.

One in nine reported they are regularly underpaid and 60 per cent of workers are forced to wait more than one pay cycle to receive backpay.

Michael Byrnes, a partner at Swaab, told Bill McDonald while he’s not surprised these issues are so prevalent, it doesn’t necessarily mean employers are setting out to rip their employees off.

“It can sometimes be a product of the complexity of some of the applicable industrial instruments,” he said.

“For instance, there can be some doubt as to what award applies to a particular employee or workplace.”
