Twin girls have died in a house fire west of Byron Bay.

Emergency services were called to the single-storey property on Mafeking Road, Goonengarry shortly after 4am yesterday.

Initial reports indicated the four-year-old girls were suffering smoke inhalation.

Paramedics and responding officers were unable to revive the girls.
