Treasurer Josh Frydenberg says he has no desire to change the preferential voting system after it cost the government the Wentworth by-election.

Some Liberals are angry Independent Kerryn Phelps is set to win the federal seat, despite securing only 29 per cent of the primary vote.

Doctor Phelps is ahead as a result of preferences from Labor and other independent candidates.

Mr Frydenberg tells Alan Jones the electoral system is democratic and says it’s time for the Coalition to move on.

“We had an outstanding candidate in Dave Sharma and we came within a whisker of winning that seat.

“I believe the party is now uniting.

“We have a two-party preferred voting system for a reason. It exhausts the public’s vote.

“Two-party preferred system has suited Australia. It has supported our democracy, which is alive and well.”

Alan Jones disagrees.

“The person who is going to go into parliament was unwanted by 70 per cent of the electorate,” says Alan.

“If that’s democracy, there’s something wrong with democracy.”
