Toowoomba’s mayor admits he was caught off guard after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk announced a major quarantine facility would be built next to Toowoomba Wellcamp Airport.

Construction on the 1000-bed facility is already underway after an agreement was reached with the Wagner family.

Mayor Paul Antonio said a number of issues raised with him from the community earlier in the year including from the local health service and business community left them with numerous questions.

He said he wrote to the Premier and Prime Minister in February with the community’s concerns.

“We have not heard boo from anybody.”

He said local MPs had fed back to him that there was around “70 per cent of people” who were concerned and wanted to know the impact on the community.
