Neil Breen says Queensland’s Chief Health Officer is “100 per cent correct” to raise the alarm on soaring health insurance costs.

Dr John Gerrard admitted he doesn’t know how people on low incomes can afford health insurance while warning about the growing pressure on the state’s public health system.

“It’s a lot of money for me and I am well paid. I mean, every time I have to pay it I wince,” Dr Gerrard said.

“The fewer people (that) have private health insurance, the more it will put pressure on the public health system.”

It’s comments that rang true with Breenie, who was stung more than $90 to get a script renewed by his GP this weekend.

“The whole system, hospitals are overrun, the Medicare rebate’s fallen behind, health insurance is through the roof,” he said.

“I would hate to see Australia end up like America. It’s going to take some real bottle from Anthony Albanese and Jim Chalmers.”
