The supply chain stat that has food producers worried

There’s a fresh warning to shore up Australia’s food manufacturing industry, or risk produce shortages and price hikes. 

A recent report by the Australian Security Leaders Climate Group warns we only have about five days’ worth of perishable food in the supply chain at any given time.

It comes as the nation’s manufacturing and processing sector remains underdeveloped.

Latrobe Institute for Agriculture and Food director Tony Bacic told Sofie Formica Australia’s food manufacturing industry needs to be “rekindled”.

“I think the Ukraine war, the COVID situation, has demonstrated that … each country, for its own security, needs to have the capacity to produce products within its own country.”
