The Number Games: Reignite your inner mathematician

Article image for The Number Games: Reignite your inner mathematician

With a degree in pure mathematics, Adam  Spencer is a man who knows numbers and equations. Following on from his Big Book of Numbers, Spencer has just released his latest book, The Number Games.

Full of hundreds of mind-bending, brain-busting games, puzzles and trivia, it’s a sure-fire way to give your brain a workout.

Spencer joins 4BC’s Alan Jones to discuss his book and the serious issues surrounding the study of mathematics for our school kids.

“We can either choose to invest in the next generation of brilliant young mathematical minds and have them guide us, or we sit around 50 years from now begging the wealthy countries that have done so for their intellectual property.”

In recent years, the number of high school students taking on mathematics has plummeted. However, for Spencer, it’s not about everyone taking on the subject, but rather encouraging the best and brightest to study it.

“My real focus is on those who are good enough to make a career out of it. Those who’ve got a real passion.

“If you’re good enough at mathematics you should be pushing yourself as hard as you possibly can because the benefits are tremendous.”
