The new model for Australia to become a republic

A new model for Australia to become a republic, called the ‘Australian Choice Model’, has been unveiled today by the Australian Republican Movement.

Each parliament in every state and territory would be able to nominate a candidate, and the federal parliament would be able to nominate three candidates, which would then be put to a national ballot.

The publicly elected Head of State would replace the Queen.

National director of the Australian Republican Movement, Sandy Biar, said the role was essentially ceremonial, rather than political.

“When we ask people ‘do you support a republic yes or no?’ Support ends up around 50 per cent,” he told Scott Emerson.

“But what people really want to know is what change will happen, what exactly is being proposed.”

He said an Australian Head of State would put Australians’ interests first.

“All Australians should have a choice about who our Head of State is. We are a grown up country, we can take it from here.”
