The nation’s lonely hearts are warned to be wary of romance scammers this Valentine’s Day as losses soar.

Australians were fleeced out of $40 million in 2022 through romance scams, with more than two thirds taken from women.

ACCC deputy chair Catriona Lowe told Laurel & Mark it’s crucial to look out for red flags when dating online.

“Some of the tactics that love scammers in particular use is they’ll declare love early and make lots of contact,” she said.

“And then they might try and move you off the platform or the app where you first met, onto a more private channel.

“That makes it harder to trace them and to take action against them.”
