The ingenious way Howard Smith Wharves recycles your oyster shells

Dean & Sofie

The Howard Smith Wharves precinct is being recognised for its ambitious sustainability practices in the Lord Mayor’s Business Awards.

With a lofty goal of 95 per cent diversion from landfill, the Wharves are one of four finalists for the Urban Utilities Award for Environmental Sustainability in Business.

“We’re really proud today to say that we’re right on that number,” Howard Smith Wharves CEO Luke Fraser told Laurel, Gary & Mark.

“We actually separate out 17 different waste streams at the Wharves and we find really innovative things to do with each of the waste streams.

“Oyster shells, it’s a really exciting initiative that we’ve been working on there with the oyster shell recycling initiative down at Moreton Bay.”
