The idea to charge drivers per kilometre

Article image for The idea to charge drivers per kilometre

There’s a controversial pitch that would see drivers charged per kilometre, as part of a proposal to re-think infrastructure long-term.

Infrastructure Australia policy and research chief Peter Colacino said there was a range of options and it was “technologically possible”.

“What we’ve seen around the world is a range of different solutions used from simple things like odometer readings, to using the types of approaches as you see in Singapore, and we see in Australia on our toll roads with readers, on rads that show when you access and depart.”

He said they believe it will “add fairness and equity”.
