The Great Reset: What motivates Australians to make big life changes

Scott Emerson

Australians have been forced to re-evaluate their livelihoods and lifestyle like never before as a result of the pandemic, a leading demographer says.

Some have called it The Great Relocation, with southerners flocking to Queensland in numbers not seen since the 1990s.

Demographer Bernard Salt, who is also a columnist for The Australian, said Australians were re-evaluating aspects of their lives, jobs and where they call home.

“I would call it a ‘Great Reset’ I think two years of the pandemic, the lockdowns and so forth has caused people to re-think where they are in life, are they are in the right house, in the right suburb, in the right job, are they in the right relationship?

“It’s almost like a philosophical review that people are undertaking and saying, ‘life is too short, now is the time for me to organise my life in a way in which I want’.”

He said Australians were still ultimately motivated by “lifestyle”.
