The early clue that told fans Victoria’s washed-up whale wasn’t Migaloo
The carcass of a dead white whale spotted at a Victorian beach is not that of the iconic Migaloo, experts have confirmed.
Marine biologists from Victoria’s Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning examined the carcass at the weekend, which is that of a sub-adult female.
Brisbane Whale Watching captain Kerry Lopez said there was a giveaway early on to indicate it wasn’t Migaloo.
“It was very, very small,” she told Laurel, Gary and Mark. “It was just a sub-adult.
“Migaloo, he’s a big whale, he’s 16, 17 metres. He’s such a big animal, so that was why I thought it quite possibly wasn’t him.”
Some have suggested the whale washed up at Mallacoota in eastern Victoria may not have been an albino at all.
Rather, the body may have become weathered and bleached over time after the whale died at sea.
