The criminologist challenging the ‘picture’ of bikies in the media

A criminologist and former police detective has analysed data suggesting that Queensland’s bikies account for less than 1 per cent of overall crime.

Dr Terry Goldsworthy also says the number of bikies has halved in recent years.

He explained it was a “different picture” than what was seen in the media.

He said there were a couple of possible reasons for the scenario.

“One option is they are offending less, so whatever is driving that, whatever the police attention etc,” he told Scott Emerson.

“the second could be that they are being detected less, in their offending that could be a resourcing issue in terms of less police looking at them, than we had say 5 years ago.

“The other issue is, this could just be where their offending rates sit, I think that’s probably the most logical explanation, we had a big splurge in bikie enforcement in 2014 when we had the bikie blitz down here at Broadbeach.”
