‘The Book Thief’ author finishes his latest novel… after 12 years of writing!

In 2005, Australian author Markus Zusak released The Book Thief thinking nobody would read it.

16 million copies, a decade on the New York Times best-seller list and a Hollywood film later, it’s safe to say he was wrong.

In 2006 he started his next novel Bridge of Clay and has been writing it ever since, “struggling” to get it over the line.

Well, Markus has finally finished what’s being labelled the most anticipated book of the decade.

He tells Alan Jones why it took him more than 10 years to complete.

“I think I was totally empty when I started writing Bridge of Clay.

“It took me a couple of years to write the first page and that’s pretty rough.

“I was just over thinking it, I was just trying to make every single thing perfect.”
