‘Tasteless’: GetUp forced to pull ad mocking Tony Abbott

Article image for ‘Tasteless’: GetUp forced to pull ad mocking Tony Abbott

GetUp has been forced to take down an advertisement that parodies Tony Abbott as a surf lifesaver.

The powerful lobby group has been campaigning against Tony Abbott in his northern beaches seat of Warringah.

The new ad, which was meant to appear in cinemas next week, depicts Mr Abbott as a lifesaver who refuses to save a drowning swimmer.

But GetUp was forced to pull the ad when the Royal Life Saving Society said it was in “very poor taste” following the drownings of father and son lifesavers in Port Campbell last weekend.

The activist group have released a statement apologising to lifesavers for the “insensitivity of the timing”, saying it was meant “to focus on Tony Abbott’s callous inaction on climate change” (full statement below).

Alan Jones says the ad is an absolute disgrace.

“They’re a tasteless lot, aren’t they, this crowd?

“These people think they’re helping someone. They should think again. They’re certainly not helping Labor, people don’t like this ugly stuff.

“Just imagine if that had been done to someone on the left.”
