Days out from the Invictus Games, athletes from 18 nations are converging on Sydney.

Starting on Saturday, injured and sick veterans will compete in 13 sports, across eight days of competition.

Invictus Games Chair, Retired Lieutenant General Peter Leahy, tells Alan Jones it’s going to be a “marvellous” time for Sydney-siders.

“It’s the chance for us all to recognise the importance of service, but also of sacrifice.

“And to be able to say thank you to the people that are here.”

More than 1000 family and friends will be stationed in town as well, with competitors asked to invite two people each who have supported them.

Mr Leahy is encouraging everybody to get into the spirit of the Games.

“They’re going to be out and about in the streets here and I’d invite the people of Sydney to say hello and thank you.”

The Invictus Games were founded by Prince Harry, who’ll be at Saturday night’s opening ceremony along with his wife Meghan.

Mr Leahy says he’s a phenomenal ambassador.

“Being a soldier himself he’s got that empathy because he understands soldiers and what they’ve been through.”

The interview prompted State President of RSL Auxiliaries Pauline James to phone in.

Ms James has been working in the lead up to the games since November 2016, receiving an enormous amount of support.

Asked if she needs any more assistance from the public, Ms James has just one request.

“I just want people to go to the Games.”
