Sydney reigns as cocaine capital, but latest data is a warning for authorities

The latest data on Australia’s drug usage has been released, showing that Sydney continues to lead the nation in the consumption of cocaine.

Data from the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission’s National Wastewater Drug Monitoring Program reveals increasing levels of consumption across Australia for a number of illicit substances.

The report shows that Australians are the sixth largest consumers of illicit stimulants out of 28 countries monitored between March and May last year.

Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission’s Principal Advisor on Drugs Shane Neilson told John Stanley that nine tonnes of meth and 3.5 tonnes of cocaine was consumed by Australians in the year to August 2022.
