Surfers Paradise MP demands a review into Schoolies after teenager’s death

John-Paul Langbroek, member for Surfers Paradise, is demanding the Queensland government launch a review into Schoolies after the death of an 18-year-old in the final week of celebrations.

Victorian schoolie Charlie Scott fell to his death from the 42nd floor of a Surfers Paradise hotel last Friday. Multiple teens have died at Schoolies over the years in similar circumstances.

“It really raises [a] question about the support the government, along with private providers, [are] giving to our young people at a very exciting but potentially dangerous time in their lives,” says Mr Langbroek.

He believes the activities and services offered in the first week of Schoolies for local students should be available in the second for those travelling interstate.

Ben Fordham hit back with the question of personal responsibility, asking, “Is it really the job of government to keep everyone safe at all times?”
