Melbourne’s Billy Slater has called time on his distinguished career, announcing he’ll retire at the end of the NRL season.

The champion fullback will hang up his boots after more than 300 NRL games, as well as 30 for his country, picking up countless awards along the way.

Slater says he’ll be forever “grateful” for his career at the top level.

Storm co-owner Gerry Ryan tells Ross Greenwood the 35-year-old is “one of the most recognised sportsmen in Australia”.

On Slater’s time with the club, Gerry says “it’s been a fantastic journey with him over those years”.

“He came down as a raw kid from Queensland and you know what? He’s never changed.

“He’s a credit to his family, to the club and to the sport and to Australia.”
