The Melbourne Storm have formally announced Brandon Smith will leave the club at the end of the 2022 NRL season.

The Storm hooker revealed on a podcast he will be signing with the Roosters in 2023, while criticising his current club.

Smith earlier today issued a statement claiming he did not intend to cause offense to his current team.

“Well, he certainly did that,” Peter Psaltis told Sofie Formica. “In the last 10 minutes, the Melbourne Storm have issued a statement of their own.”

Storm CEO Justin Rodski expressed disappointment with Smith’s comments, which he says do not align with the club’s values and culture.

“We acknowledge Brandon’s apology made on social media today and his willingness now to prepare for the 2022 season with Storm,” he said.

“Brandon has every right to explore future opportunities as any player would in his position, and ultimately we respect his decision to play football elsewhere from 2023.”
