There are calls for a new independent agency to administer and oversee veteran support services.

Concerns are growing that the Department of Veterans of Affairs is failing to help many returned servicemen.

A new report highlights serious gaps in compensation and rehabilitation systems.

Shadow Veterans Affairs Minister Shayne Newman tells Steve Price, the issue can no longer be ignored.

“We’ve got to break down that gate and make sure people feel comfortable, feel that sense of fellowship with one another so they can connect with each other and look after each other.

“That’s where I think the emphasis has got to be, that’s what we would have done if we won the election.

“I think there’s a whole range of things we can do better… all of this should happen before you’re discharged from the military, not post.

“And people have got to not be forgotten!”
